"Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither— whatever they do prospers."
Psalm 1:1-4
Our family and farm raise south poll cattle. South Polls are bred to be slick-haired, small-framed cows with emphasis placed on high fertility, longevity, and calm disposition. South Polls are bred to excel on a grass based grazing system. Ultrasound and actual carcass data on the South Poll tells us that they are as tender, or more tender, than straight bred English cattle.
The reason we have chosen to raise South Poll Cattle is because of their excellent tolerance for high temperatures and efficient conversion of grass to tender beef. Many cattle have tough meat when they are only feed forages such as grass and clover. Angus do not do well with high temperatures. And there are lots of cows who are tough to handle, skittish and wild. Our South Poll Cattle are the calmest, gentlest, best dispositioned cattle, who tolerate hot Missouri temperatures and yield tender beef. Who could ask for more?
What does this mean?
Biodynamics is a holistic, ecological and ethical approach to farming, gardening, food and nutrition.
Biodynamic farmers strive to create a diversified, balanced farm ecosystem that generates health and fertility as much as possible from within the farm itself. Preparations made from fermented manure, minerals, and herbs are used to help restore and harmonize the vital life forces of the farm and to enhance the nutrition, quality, and flavor of the food being raised.
Community supported agriculture (CSA), for example, was pioneered by biodynamic farmers, and many biodynamic practitioners work in creative partnerships with other farms and with schools, medical and wellness facilities, restaurants, hotels, homes for social therapy, and other organizations. Biodynamics is thus not just a holistic agricultural system but also a potent movement for new thinking and practices in all aspects of life connected to food and agriculture.
